Tents
The standard issue was the Polar Pyramid two-man tent that was used in both camps for a toilet tent, mainly because people could stand up in it and can handle very strong winds. A design based on the tents used by Scott in the early 1900s, the Polar Pyramid is a reliable tent used in all of our field camps.
Polar Haven Tent. -Len A Polar Haven insulated tent was used primarily as a field laboratory. This tent was erected by a Scott Base crew that went in before the researchers arrived on site. Because chemical liquids used in the laboratory could not be frozen, a heater was installed to keep the inside of the tent above 0°C. These tents are large enough for the entire team to fit comfortably inside along with cooking, science and communications equipment.
Miers Valley Camp. -Craig For sleeping accommodation in the Miers and Garwood, field workers used a “Mountain Hardware” two man “tunnel tent”. These tents had a number of pockets on the side walls for keeping small items off the tent floor as well as a built in fly and vestibules front and back to keep equipment out of the snow. When the sun is shining these tents can become very warm as they trap heat in much like a green house.
