From 2013 to 2024, the International Centre for Terrestrial Antarctic Research led and facilitated interdisciplinary studies of the terrestrial ecosystem and biodiversity of Antarctica. Findings of ICTAR research have helped guide conservation, protection, and management of the unique and fragile terrestrial ecosystem of Antarctica, and their impact will continue in the years to come.
Prof. S. Craig Cary was the Director of ICTAR until his untimely passing in February of 2024.
In Memoriam – Professor Craig Cary (1954 – 2024)
Craig dedicated his forty-year career to studying microbial life in extreme environments, from deep-sea expeditions in the DSV Alvin exploring hydrothermal vents to trekking around the geothermal pools of Yellowstone Nation Park and conducting 18 seasons of study all across Antarctica from the top of Mount Erebus to the tip of Cape Adare.

Craig was relentlessly active and enthusiastic throughout his life. His kindness and encouragement will be greatly missed among everyone who had the fortune to work, collaborate, or meet with Craig, even in passing.
AGAr
One of Craig’s legacies is the Antarctic Genetic Archive, featuring preserved genetic samples from 20+ years of Antarctic expeditions by researchers in multiple countries.
The AGAr sample registry is available to review here
