Mt Melbourne and Mt Rittman

Mount Melbourne and Mount Rittmann

In October 2012 Prof. Craig Cary was gone for just over a week to join a 4 person team which visited 2 other geothermal sites in Antarctica to survey and review the protection of these unique sites. Although they flew through Scott base (see other timelapses) they stayed at the Italian base showing the great collaboration amongst Antarctic treaty members, it was like a little piece of frozen Italy, especially the food.

Mt Melborne it is a 2800m active geothermal site. While there the researchers experienced 50 knot winds with a wind chill below -60 celcius.

Mt Rittmann was a much calmer location with a wind chill of about -30 celcius, it is a bit smaller at 2000m high.
