100 words about your scientific interest
My work is centered on molecular biology, a fascinating and quickly expanding field to be involved with. Since starting at the thermophile research unit I have worked on a number of projects but my current study has proven to be the most interesting allowing me to develop my own sampling rig to use in Antarctica. My hope is to continue with molecular biology while still being able to think about new ways to conduct my research and build the equipment I need.
100 words about what you do for ICTAR
My master’s research involved investigating the microbial structure and responses to geochemical differences within and between Bratina Island ponds (on the McMurdo Ice Shelf). These ponds are so special due to their simple ecosystems and extreme conditions (which are highly variable) all within a localised area. My work involves a number of molecular techniques to determine species composition coupled with geochemical analysis. My masters is soon to end however I will be continuing/expanding my work through my PhD which will allow me to carry out a metabolic investigation to couple with the community analysis. Additionally I will conduct a number of manipulation experiments to determine potential global climate change responses as well as contamination issues.
